Cliff dwelling tour tickets are separate, booked only via Recreation.gov / 1-877-444-6777, released 14 days ahead in season. Because the standard charge is per vehicle rather than per adult, priceVal is null.
Age notesAncestral Pueblo cliff dwellings and mesa-top sites about 35 miles west of Durango — included as a day trip (see report for rationale). In winter, visits are overlooks, the Mesa Top Loop drive and hiking: ranger-led cliff dwelling tours do NOT run (2026 tour season was May 4 – Oct 21) and tours involve ladders and steep steps, so interior tours suit older children in season. Younger children can do overlooks and the Visitor & Research Center with adults.
BookingNo reservation needed to enter the park (NPS). Ranger-led cliff dwelling tours (in season only) REQUIRE reservations via Recreation.gov, released 14 days in advance at 8:00am MDT.
Suggested timeAbout 6 hours
AccessibilityNo wheelchair/stroller/sensory tag is claimed: cliff dwelling access is by ranger-led tour involving ladders and uneven stone steps per NPS tour information, and Wetherill Mesa / museum facilities are seasonally closed as noted. Check the NPS accessibility information for overlook and Visitor Center specifics before visiting — it was not captured in this pass.
ParkingVisitor & Research Center parking at the park entrance; park roads and overlooks have their own pull-out parking. Entrance fee is per vehicle (see priceNote); cash is not accepted at the entrance station.
Tickets & bookingEntrance passes can be bought digitally on Recreation.gov at no extra cost; NPS advises printing the pass or saving it to the phone BEFORE arrival because connectivity in the park is limited. Cliff dwelling tour tickets (in season) are sold separately via Recreation.gov and are NOT covered by any entrance pass.
Official tipsEntrance is card/mobile-payment only - do not arrive with cash expecting to pay at the gate. Photo ID must be shown with an America the Beautiful pass.
Seasonal notesStanding flags from collection (NPS): cliff dwelling TOURS ended Oct 21, 2026; Wetherill Mesa is closed for the season (reopens late spring 2027); the Mesa Verde Museum is closed for renovations from Oct 25, 2026 until late spring 2027; Far View Lodge, Morefield Campground and most dining are closed in winter. A winter visit = Mesa Top Loop, overlooks, Visitor & Research Center and hiking. The Visitor & Research Center's posted 8:30am-4:00pm hours carry an NPS page caveat (the date range printed on that page reads '2024').
